Illustrations are wonderful negotiations between word and image. When choosing what and how to illustrate a text, I have to understand the audience and how the text is understood. For On Dead Mountain I was illustrating a long narrative poem that was intended to be expressive and inventive. For the illustrations for books such as Women & Art and Artivism the images were more neutral.

Reproduction quality also changes an approach, with On Dead Mountain being printed on art paper, whereas other books have cheaper paper and rely on black and white without greyscale.
